Pottering in the Potager

Things are getting going with a vengeance down in the potager (vegetable plot). We planted some potatoes in the serre (plastic tunnel greenhouse) and we ate the last at lunchtime yesterday. Tomatoes in the serre are ripening too. There are 4O tomato plants outside and they seem to be loving the raised beds we so carefully prepared for thm in the autumn – I can imagine that homemade tomato soup and see those jars of bottled tomatoes that will keep us going through the winter.

Outside potatoes have been banked up with grass cuttings instead of earth – seems to be working well and then the rotted grass will be dug in. No doryphores (colarado potato beetle) yet this year – this is a common pest here and usually means an early morning walk around the potatoes picking them off. We did plant linseed to deter them – our neighbour says that doesn’t work but he has doryphores and we don’t so who knows?!

What’s on the potager jobs list today? Picking redcurrants to make redcurrant jelly and artichokes for lunch – yum!

A bientôt.
